Learning How To Sing

Singing is all around me.  Did I ever learn how to sing?  After all, singing has been around me most of my life.  And I wanted very much to learn how to sing well.  But it wasn’t until I discovered online singing courses that I began to fulfill my dream of learning how to sing – but more about that later.

My Mother Learned How To Sing When She Was Very Young

My mother was and still is an amazing singer – even at 86 years old.  When she was younger, she was the favorite for solos during church services.  In addition to singing in the church choir, she also sang in the choral union, at weddings – people wanted her to sing everywhere.  Now she doesn’t do solos any longer, but she still sings in church and in the choral union.  What dedication!  She was honored recently for being the longest member in the Elmhurst Choral union – 50 years!

Growing up with her was a bit intimidating because at some subconscious level, I didn’t think I could match her talent, and so I didn’t learn how to sing well.

My Ex-Husband Learned How To Sing

And then there’s my ex-husband who is a professional singer – mostly blues, pop, and country-western.  In fact, because of my dislike for c-w music, I didn’t even want to meet him!!  But that’s the subject of a different story!

He is not a native English speaker and always had lots of problems writing down the lyrics for songs.  Listening to songs and transcribing the words is not easy in your own language, let alone in a foreign language.  This was, of course, before the internet made this very simple.

But once he and I began to date, I took over transcribing songs for him – relatively easy for me since I’m a native English speaker.  And besides, I knew most of the songs by heart anyway.

He and I tried some duets on occasion – but just at home – never in public.  I was still too intimidated to take my singing public.  I admired his lack of self-consciousness in front of the public.  He’d sing songs in public even when he was just beginning to learn them.  And so, once again, I didn’t learn how to sing.
